Planting Time
The gobblers are gobbling and bob whites are bobwhiting and all wild creatures are doing their Spring thing. As these birds and animals prepare to rear a new generation, hunters, landowners and all nature lovers should also prepare now to help wildlife this Fall and Winter. One of the best ways to help is by planting some seed producing plants which can be used by wildlife later on. Now available through your game warden or the Rappahannock Extension Office is some seed just for this purpose. This seed is a mixture containing, lespedeza, milo, millet, buckwheat, soybeans, cowpeas and rape. Each three pound bag will plant 1/8 acre. If planted in a narrow strip an eighth acre will extend a long way.
These patches must be protected from livestock. Ideal locations are along grown up fence rows or other areas that provide natural cover. They should be near water. A strip along a small overgrown stream is perfect. If you don’t have a suitable location yourself maybe the landowner where you hunt
