Farm Ponds, a

Farm ponds represent one of the oldest and most effective means for prevention of water pollution, H. S. Barksdale, Chairman of the Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Committee said.
Ponds have gained this reputation by helping to cut down the flow of silt from farmlands into streams, lakes, and rivers. Mr. Barksdale explained that water running off farmlands during storms can carry large amounts of silt and other pollutants.
He said farmers use a number of techniques to slow down this water flow. Such measures as building terraces, constructing sod waterways, and plowing across a slope rather than up and down it have proven effective in reducing sedimentation of ponds
