ishing 1 oumament If the success of last year’s oumament is repeated, the Second Annual Smith Mountain Fishing Tournament should make Smith Mountain Lake the msinest fishing hole in Virginia he weekend of May 1-3. These ire the dates for the tournament. Prizes valued in excess of &5,000 await lucky anglers who and big fish. The top category is ;he largemouth bass class, a fish tor which the lake is noted. The winner cops a boat, motor and trailer. Five other bass anglers will receive fishing tackle for their efforts. Prize muskellunge catches have been made in the lake the past few seasons, and these big fish have been moved up to the 2nd category. The top angler gets a High Point Subdivision lot on the lake. Those who place second and third win fishing tackle.
Crappie fishermen will have their day also with the top man receiving a 5-day vacation for two at modem Sportman’s Inn. Three other crappie fishermen will receive fishing tackle.
Smith Mountain smallmouth bass are not as abundant as their bigmouth cousins, but the waters produce good bronzeback catches. Four smallmouth enthusiasts will be awarded fishing tackle. And three anglers will receive fishing tackle for brown and rainbow trout. These fish do not spawn in the lake, but the put-and-take program has produced some interesting trout fishing.
A final prize for $100 in merchandise goes to the angler who travels the greatest distance to participate. The winner last year was Melvin Cox of Kodiak, Alaska. Old Dominion anglers do not have much of a chance for this one.
