Local Anglers Score While the top prize last season went to John Wayne of Canton, Ohio for his 9-pound, 4-ounce largemouth, Old Dominion anglers took home most of the bacon. Six who proved themselves experts hailed from Roanoke and four frop Lynchburg. Others came from Blacksburg, Altavista, Danville, Salem, Martinsville, Radford $pd Lafayette. J. A. Hamlett of nearby Rocky Mount landed t^ie biggest fish, a 13-pound, 12-ounce musky, but Ed Conner of Spencer was close behind with an 11-pound, 10-ounce muskellunge.
Other top fish were a 1-pound, 7-ounce crappie, a 4-pound, 10-ounce smallmouth bass and a 2-pound, 1-ounce rainbow trout.
Smith Mountain Lake is still young and the fish have had another year to grow. Some real trophies should turn up this year.
No Meat Contest
Bob Price, president of the sponsoring Optimist Club of Cave Spring, is quick to point out that this is no meat contest. A big stringer of fish will earn the angler nothing but a brush with the warden if he goes over his limit. Nor is there a reward for total pounds — unless they are wrapped up in a single trophy fish.
