For example, local families in the $7,000 to $8,000 range have deductions of 21 percent, on average, whereas deductions for those in the $15,000 to $20,000 area amount to only 16 percent of their gross. The normal deductions listed for families throughout the country with incomes corresponding to the Rappahannock County average are: for charitable contributions, $268, for interest on loans and on installment debt, $629, for local taxes, $625, and for medical expenses, $378.
In some instances, a family’s deductions may run well above these averages. That does not mean that they are improper or will be disallowed. It does mean that the taxpayer must be able to substantiate the figures with proper records.
The Commerce Clearing House cautions that the deductions it lists for each income group are not to be taken as the amounts the Internal Revenue Service will necessarily accept without requiring proof.
