With over a million catchable size trout to be stocked under combined state and federal programs during 1971 anglers can look forward to about 5 percent more fish on the average than were stocked a year ago, reports Game Commission Fish Division Chief Jack Hoffman. Over half, or some 534,950 trout are to be in the streams on opening day, April 3 when the season begins at 12 noon. An additional 320,050 trout are to be stocked in May followed by 139,100 during summer months. A fall stocking of 57,600 trout is planned if fish are available and water conditions permit. Trout fishermen are required to have a special $1 trout license in addition to their regular fishing license. Those fishing on National Forests must also have a National Forest stamp. Funds from both of these sources help finance the trout stocking program. An expanded 9 months stocking program has helped provide some trout fishing throughout most of this period.
