At the outset, let me confess that I have an emotional reaction to the article in the Rappahannock News March 4 by Wesley P. Judkins, Virginia Tech professor of horticulture and Extension horticulturist, even though Mr. Judkins in the article warns about the “emotionalism of misguided individuals” who are questioning the wide-scale use of pesticides, fungicides and fast-acting artificial fertilizers in our present day agriculture.
This kind of ploy has been widely used by the chemical industry to discount opposition to the proliferation of the use of chemicals in our soil, our air, our water, as if being emotional about the pollution of our environment is a foolish thing. If one cannot be emotional about this subject, which is turning out to be fundamental to our very existence, then what can one be emotional about?
