Starting in 1920 and ending in the present, it tells of a way of life which used to be called comfortable and dignified but which contained within it the causes of its own undoing and the seeds of a post-war world which may or may not be better. And just as the times change before the reader’s eyes, so do the characters, who not only grow up and grow old but are also shaped and reshaped by the prejudices and goals of their class and their environment.
