There have been a number of requests from sportsmen’s groups in recent years for a year around trout season to do away with opening day crowds. When asked how such a program would affect trout stocking, Hoffman said, “we would probably stock fish in suitable streams during January and February, increasing the volume and frequency of stocking to a peak in late March and early April with stockings proceeding about as they do now for the remainder of the season. Some additional fish could be stocked in the fall,” he added. He indicated that summer stockings were about the maximum that water conditions would allow at the present time. “If stocking schedules were announced before hand crowds would follow the trucks,” he said, “and if attempts were made to stock in secret, local residents would have a marked advantage over persons from outlying areas.”
