The crv “For every child accidentally poisoned this year, there is an adul^responsible, ’ ’ will be heard over and over again dnnng National Poison Prevention Week, March 21-27. “The National Planning Council for Poison Prevention Week hopes to alert all Americans to the inherent dangers which can occur through careless use of chemicals, drugs and pesticides It also hopes to inspire acceptance of a set of rules which if followed, could safeguard users from those dangers,” said R. H. Gruenhagen, Virginia Tech professor and extension specialist in the University s chemicals, drugs and pesticides unit. ^ , “The need for a Poison Prevention Week would not exist if peopl® exercised care in the selection, use, and storage of those materials, Gruenhagen stated. ._,_ To those who use chemicals, drugs or pesticides, Gruenhagen suggested, “Read the label on each- container before each use and follow all precautions to the letter. . “Keep all potential poisons in the containers they were in at the time of purchase. Keep them where children and their pets, or any animals, cannot reach them. Preferably, all chemicals, drugs, and pesticides should be stored under lock and key in rodent-proof cabinets. They should be kept away from foods, feeds, seeds and any other material which could become contaminated, added Gruenhagen. He said further, “Empty containers should be disposed of as specified on the label. If disposal instructions are not printed on the label, disposal should be in such a way that adults, children, pets and wildlife cannot come into contact with them. And care should be taken to prevent contaminating water supplies. “Improperly used pesticides and all other chemicals can be hazardous. Users should see a doctor if symptoms of illness occur during or after their use,” Gruenhagen warned.
