or tne last several days 1 have seen a lot of people in hospitals. It is amazing how some of the suffering people cling to the hope that they will get well and return to their homes and loved ones. I hope they make it, but ‘the sword outwears its sheath’ and the sheath of some seems to need replacing. I was talking with a nurse and she seemed to think it was against God’s will to keep life going by artificial means, when the soul is longing to be free. She told of an instance where she had a patient who had been on a respirator, or pulmotor, anyway the patient couldn’t breathe except by this means. Well, she took the patient’s pulse, or tried to, he didn’t have any, he was dead and still breathing; or the machine was still fulfilling its function. How long had he been dead? Who knows. Could this be classified a: cruelty to the human animal?
According to some readers, euthanasia is not acceptable. Neither do they think it is the merciful thing to do, to prolong life by artificial means. I think a lot of us feel the way the poet felt who penned these lines.
