our rivers and streams and lakes. How much better it would be for our food production if, instead, the garbage and sewage of our huge cities were processed and made available as natural fertilizers. Many cities and towns are doing this already, and much research is underway on the many methods of returning our waste products to the land. As to the mineral rock fertilizers, the organic gardener and farmer does make use of them. They have found that the natural rock fertilizers, such as phosphate rock and potash rock, when applied where deficient, have a more lasting benefit than the addtreated rock that make up the high-analyses fertilizers.

I must also disagree with Mr. Judkins that “similar conclusions must be reached relative to the need of toxic chemicals in crop production.” I certainly agree with that the “specialized crops we cultivate for food are grown in concentrated plantings... making them more susceptible to attack by diseases and insections than mixtures of several species growing under natural conditions.” There, perhaps Mr. Judkins has put his finger on the very problem. He says it is for this reason we must turn more and more to the use of toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Would it not be more logical to try to reverse this trend and encourage the growing of food production under more natural conditions?
