Harrisonburg State Teachers College, presently known as Madison College. She taught school for 12 years in Warren and Rappahannock counties. She was married in 1932 to Robert L. Massie who was Commissioner of Revenue for Rappahannock. She became his deputy in 1948 and after his death in October 1951 she was appointed to fill his unexpired term.

In 1956 Mrs. Massie married Frank Spalding and he died ten years later. She has one son, Robert L. Massie jr. who is Superintendent of Special Education in the schools of the City of Richmond and is an instructor evenings at Virginia Commonwealth University.
