ford M. Hardin recently took public note of the REAP costsharing practices for small tracts of woodland. Tree farmers and other individual woodlands owners may find it well worthwhile to participate in the new Rural Environmental Assistance Program, which gives high priority to improve forestry practices. Some of the cost-sharing features of REAP are designed to foster reforestation ahd better management practices while improving the visible attractiveness of wooded areas. The Secretary of Agriculture, speaking before the American Paper Institute pointed out that “at present levels of timber management and production, thd growth in demand expected during the coming decade seems certain to stimulate significant increases in timber prices.”
He also said, “Over the long run the nation will have to rely more on private timber ownership to meet the greater requirements of the future. Formerly, when needs could be seen increasing, the forest industry could expand the harvest on private lands. But this source of supply has been reduced as a result of past cuttings. We must not delay in the developmenl of privately owned forest. Time lost cannot be regained.”
