If you are planning a trip to the Northeast this summer (June, July, August, or September), please inspect your vehicle carefully before and after returning. You might mention this problem to others you encounter - for although both State and Federal inspectors are checking vehicles, they have an impossible task. The egg masses are the most commonly transported stage (each containing about 600 eggs). These egg masses are tan colored, one to two inches long, one-half inch wide, and covered with light tan colored hairs. Cocoons, caterpillars, or adults might also be transported by an unsuspecting traveler. The cocoons are about one inch long, purplish-brown, and can be found anywhere.
