The best evidence of your age is a birth or baptismal certificate made within 5 years of your birth. However, if these are not available, other documents may be used. Generally, the older the document the better.
If you have children under 18-or youngsters between 18 and 22 who are full-time students-bring their birth certificates and records of their social security numbers.
It’s generally a good idea to apply about 3 months before you retire. Don’t delay because you don’t have any of the required documents or information. The people in the social security office will be glad to help you get the necessary information.
Remember, if you are housebound or unable to come to the office for some other reason, arrangements can be made for taking your application by telephone or, if necessary, someone can come to your home. Just let the social security office know.
