Highway fatalities in Virginia for this year have now passed the 500 mark. The Director of the Highway Safety Division of Virginia, John Hanna, today issued a statement concerning the state’s loss. He said, “Two hundred fifty of these victims were killed by virtue of excessive drinking while driving. Seventy percent of the crashes involving these persons occurred because of speeding, running red lights or disregarding stop signs.” Hanna added, “We’re all out here together; we must become concerned.”
Although the fatality toll has passed the 500 mark for the year, the trend in recent weeks has reflected a reduction over the toll of 1970. In some instances the death toll tas been from 12 to 15 behind the count for the same date last year.
“We must reduce this total,” said Hanna, “ said Hanna, “let us help each other to do so by driving carefully.”
