The Fourth of July is drawing near. The fireworks stands are popping up like mushrooms around the state. The children are feasting their eyes on the various kinds of fireworks that are available for the big day: firecrackers, sparklers, Roman candles, small rockets and even fountains! Some of these fireworks make loud booming noises, others soft sprays of color and still others, amazing wheels of rainbow fire. Celebration is in the air and forgotten, for now, is the looming tragedy that is wrapped up in each pretty box of fireworks.
Every year hundreds of persons - many of them children - will be injured by fireworks. The Virginia Society for the Prevention of Blindness urges you to stay away from amateur backyard displays. Instead, leave the fireworks displays in the hands of the professionals and attend a locallysupervised public display where you and your family can enjoy fireworks in safety.
