MRS. CORDLE HEARD a noise in the house about midnight and assumed it was her son David returning home, but she wondered why he was making so much noise. Investigation revealed a large black bear in the kitchen. She called T.J. Pillar who lives only a few hundred yards away. As he approached her property in his auto the headlights picked up the form of the stealthy beast on the porch steps.
The noise of the horn and the glare of the lights dispeled the bear and further investigation disclosed the wire torn from the screened porch and the top panel of the storm door pushed out. The inside wooden door had not been closed because of the dreadfully hot, humid weather.
Paw prints and dislocated objects showed the animal had eaten a can of bacon drippings, indeed had licked the container very clean. It had overturned the toaster and can opener and left muddy paw prints all over the counter top. Lastly it had taken the can of peanuts from the top of the refrigerator and placed it on the counter. Apparently bruin was attempting to remove the plastic top when the lady of the house interrupted the feast.
