AFTER THE BEAR had retreated to the surrounding woods, and David had arrived home, the householders all settled down to recapture their dreams. Shortlived they were, however, for the hungry animal next visited the trash cans in the Pillar’s garage and crashed through their screened porch to gain access to a large container of tin cans and hard refuse.
Hearing the clatter, the folks rallied again to defend their homestead. Mr. Pillar said his wife, Ruth, was very brave. She was pushing him along in front of her as they attempted to figure out just where Mr. Bear was in the dark. Who was the hunter and who was hunted was at the moment a moot question.
Bruin made a hurried exit through the hole in the screen and faded into the recesses of the darkness. Once more nightcaps were donnedby the weary occupants of the house, Mr. and Mrs. Pillar and Mrs. Judson Smith, their houseguest from Norfolk.
