LIME DEFICIENCY RETARDING CORN YIELDS — Received two separate calls this month to inspect corn fields having large areas of stunted, off colored corn. Samples sent to the Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic came back negative.
Soil samples taken'from different areas of the fields, representing different stages of growth, revealed pH range of 4.2 to 5.3. Most of our crops and grasses require a pH range of 6-6.5 for efficient utilizaton of soil nutrients and profitable yields.
Repeat' heavy applications of acid based Nitrogen causes soil pH to decrease more rapidly and requires more frequent liming to correct. Farmers making increased annual application of nitrogen on corn, fescue and orchardgrass should be aware of this and taken soil samples more frequently and carefully to determine lime requirements.
