OVER THE objections of Supervisor H. B. Wood Jr., Rappahannock will be a member of Virginia Planning District 9, which will have an organizational meeting at 8 p.m. January 16 at the Culpeper Town Hall.
District 9 is the last regional planning district in Virginia to be organized, and will be composed of the counties of Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison and Orange, and the towns of Warrenton and Culpeper. Not all have indicated a readiness to join, but Rappahannock’s decision adds up to 51 per cent of the population, and paves the way for formal organization.
Membership will cost Rappahannock $1,100 a year, and Wood immediately . raised questions. “I don’t see it will do us any good,” he said.
Chairman Newbill Miller thought membership would be beneficial, even though he admitted that “I can’t name a specific thing that would be good for us.”
IN MILLER’S view, the question “boils down” to things like this: “When down in Sperryville, the time comes to put in a public sewer, then membership in the Planning District will help us. The only way we’ll get federal funds (for such projects)
