“THOU SHALT NOT COVET”

Three of the words in this commandment ar£ archaic; that is, they are not in common usage. But, I think most of us know what it means. Maybe we could paraphrase it and say: Don’t desire anything that gives you a guilt complex.

Bobby Fisher says that in playing against his alter ego he finds himself constantly winning, even though he tries to be fair with his other self. Someone has said that there is a certain amount of larceny in all of us. That may be so. Sometimes when I play solitaire and see an ace in a certain position I find myself trying to shuffle the cards in such a manner that the ace will come into play. Cheating? Well, in the rare instances when I beat 01’ Sol it gives me a lift; I am sure that with most of us winning is a motivating force, whatever the prize.

Don’t desire anything that belongs to your neighbor, his home, his position, his car nor anything that ^belongs to him, expecially his wife. It seems . that more trouble is incurred by transgressing this 0 portion of this commandment than anything else. He might have a beautiful home on a hill that commands a beautiful view, okay, that’s his. His position might be a lucrative one with enumerable advantages, and that car, Oboy how nice it would be to take it out on the straight-a-way and open her up. Maybe if you desired these things you might be forgiven, I said might, but his wife is a NO NO.

Most of the time it is a pretty good set-up, so don’t meddle with it. □
