New area

codes

IN ONE week, telephone companies will switch to an 804 area code for central and southeastern Virginia telephone subscribers.

Persons served by Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company in Washington will be retained in the 703 area code region.

The new area code designation for about half of Virginia’s telephones will affect direct distance dialing only. Local calls will be unaffected.

The area codes 703 and 804, will be divided by a line extending from the northern Virginia area, adjacent to Washington, D. C., southwest along the Blue Ridge Mountains toward Roanoke and the southwestern part of the state.

LOCAL telephone numbers will not change for any V. T. & T. customers. All seven local digits will remain the same for each V.T.&T. customer.

The addition of a second area code for Virginia was necessitated by the near saturation of the 703 area code. The addition of the 804 area code will add approximately 600 possible local exchanges for the state.
