SUPERVISOR Wood commented: “If we don’t have any authority we might as well quit.’v

The sheriff started to repeat his point, and Wood interrupted: “We know that, John Walker!”

After everyone hunched over budget figures and after more discussion, Wood still insisted that a formal letter be written to the state demanding an explanation for the raise in excess of 5.5 per cent.”

All voted in favor of sending the letter, with the exception of Chairman Newbill Miller. Said he: “I’m opposed. I was in favor of 7.1 per cent, so I’m against.”

Sheriff Jenkins made a final plea to the Board “to leave the salaries granted by the Compensation Board alone.”

“I’m agreeable to what the Board did,” said Miller, apparently meaning “Compensation ” Board, not Board of Supervisors.

“You have to get elected, just like wie do,” said H. B. Wood, to the Sheriff. John Walker Jenkins replied that if the Borad asked for a hearing, he’d ask to be heard, too.

THE BUDGET statements of Mrs. Jamieson and Mr. Stokes stirred far less conversation.
