THE FOOD Inspection Section of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce (VDAC)has issued a warning on' two special dietary supplements, based on information received from the Federal Food and Drug Administration.
Consumers are warned about two products which are derived from apricot kernels and contain potentially dangerous levels of hydrogen cyanide. The two products are "Aprikern” and “Bee-Seventeen,” and are sold nationally as special dietary supplements, primarily in health food stores, VDAC stated.
The “Aprikern” capsules were found to contain an average of two milligrams of hydrogen cyanide per capsule. FDA scientists estimate that ingestion of five such capsules couldt result in cyanide poisoning and be fatal to a child. Twenty capsules could be fatal to an adult. FDA also estimates that two packets of the “Bee-Seventeen” product contain enough Jiydrogen cyanide to cause cyanide poisoning in a small child.
“IN THE interest of public safety, consumers and retailers are advised to destroy any supplies of these two products that they may have,” said Ray E.
