IT IS A TIME OF THINKING of birthdays. I guess you would call the term birthday as a misnomer in that it should only refer to your actual birthdate; that is when it is used as anniversary date of your day of birth. We sing “happy birthday to you, etc.,” whereas it would be proper to sing “happy anniversary of your natal day.” Don’t suppose that would be very popular, so for the sake of brevity let’s just continue to call them birthdays.
In our family, when I was young, my parents would honor each child’s birthday with a special dinner and maybe some small present. When my youngest brother and youngest sister came along we had two birthdays so near each other they celebrated them together. Whoah. There were actually four birthdays, my father and young sister had birthdays in .August about two days apart, , my mother and' young brother" celebrated their’s in September under the same circumstances. It was a rather unique way they did this, they would celebrate birthdays on the nearest Sunday to the actual date. In that way their friends come and enjoy the family dinner with them. Bithdays were important in my family.
We are about to celebrate the most important birthday in the history of the world. In the family of God’s people that birthday was not thought important enough to record the actual date, so for the sake of expediency the early church fathers borrowed an established pagan holiday as the birthday of the Christ. *
I heard one person say that he celebrated his birthday on the anniversary of the date he was reborn into the family of his Lord. That borders on religious fanaticism1, but it just might be that Christ feels more honored with a dedicated life of that sort than with the paganistic methods of today.□
