Luke' then asked the representative of the State Water Control Board why their standards were so strict for Sperryville while they “signed'a contract to DuPont which allowed them to further pollute the James River.’’ The representative didn’t deny the charge.
“I want you to understand that explaining this double standard is a political problem for me,” Luke said.
THE BOD sample for pollution in the North Fork was actually made from samples taken in the South Fork, Luke said, pointing to a list of statistics the consulting firm had prepared. “I’m not arguing that there’s no pollution in the North Fork. But it does suggest the study is not too thoroughly done, ’ ’ he said.
“Our study was based on the statistics we were given,” Dice said. “All we have done is prepare a document that tries to pull things together. I’ve said before it really amounts to a statement of need.”
It was later decided that the Rappahannock County could apply in behalf of Sperryville, since the community is not incorporated, for a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency that would enable further study of sewer alternatives. The application would have to go through the State Water Control Board.
