THE RACING at Rappahannock Hunt’s point-topoint last Saturday was excellent, as 68 thoroughbreds competed fiercely over the difficult mountainside courses at Thornton Hill Farm near Sperryville.
Three finishes were so close that spectators weren’t sure of the results until the official announcements. Witold Kuncewicz’s In the Know, who has never been defeated in a point-to-point, won the amateur hurdle race by a head, Randolph Rouse’s Quashed was the victor by a nose in the owner-rider timber contest, and Sally Strawbridge’s Stretch II took the second division of open hurdle race by a neck.
Probably the biggest upset of the day w&s the winning of the Mary D. Slaughter Memorial, the open timber race, by an unknown (outside of the Rappahannock Hunt territory) team of Michael Brown on Miss Cherry. It was the first time the 17-year-old foxhunting rider had ever raced over fences, and it was the first time for the brown mare too, who is owned by Hunter’s Retreat, the Elzy Brown Farm of nearby
