First race of the sunny, spring-like day, which had begun with steady rain and had spectators prepared for a re-run of last year’s downpour and mud, was the pair race. Winners were the Rappahannock team of Barbara Kilby’s Black Magic and Hunter’s Retreat’s Flamingo, ridden by Janet Quaintance. Second was Old Dominion’s Mr. and Mrs. George Cabeen on their Nickles and Harwood, winners at Casanova. Rappahannock Hunt also took third with James Fletcher IH on Dunese and Wade Massie on Mulkey Mountain.

IN THE Double Gate Turf Race, Larmonde Stable’s Irish Model was the winner, ridden by Gray Price, home from college and riding for the first time since summer. Mr. and Mrs. John Flim’s On Purpose, with Felix Neusch up, was second, followed by Turney McKnight on Audrey Riker’s Fools Rush.
