bridge’s Stretch n, ridden by Skip Brittle, was the winner of the second division of the Rappahannock, the open hurdle race.
Arch Kingsley’s Madagascar, with Bob Witham up, was second. Third to these really top class horses, who have both won major hurdle stakes, was Ronald, owned, bred and trained by Richard Rector of The Plains and ridden by Jonathan Ruhsam. Ronald won the first victory of his career, the maiden hurdles, last week at Casanova.
In the first division of the same race, run in six and a half seconds slower time, Randy Rouse’s erratic Bongo Mongo, who bolted through the wings last week, was the winner. Sent to the front on the second last fence by jockey Jonathan Ruhsam, he showed the way home to H. R. Heflin’s Lady’s Tune, ridden by Patrick Powers, and third Arthur Franklin’s Battle Ripple with Josephine Reuter riding, who had piloted the mare to win this race last year.
Sally Strawbridge won the ladies’ race, The Mount Salem, making it two in a row. This time she rode Rend Rock to an easy ten length victory- Sara Marshall on Speedrock again set the pace. Susan Green with her Man’s Friend was second, followed by Bonnie Beach on Mistletoe Farm’s Bit of Victory and Joan Jones riding her Royal Warrior.
