Rouse’s Quashed had defeated Oare’s Allen B. J., but Allen, who has won on the Rappahannock' course the past two years, had a good chance to even the score.
The field of ten included Peter Winants, assistant editor of The Chronicle of the Horse, who not only can write about, but also can ride races. After a good start, Rouse and Oare let others set the pace, staying in the middle of the pack. Coming down the hill toward the 14th fence, Rouse let Quashed roll on past the leaders by four lengths.
As they galloped up hill over the fence near the paddock, Oare pushed Allen B. J. to the second spot, with Roy Graham, the early leader, still third. Over the final three fences the order was unchanged, and it was a hard fight to the finish with Quashed by a nose, then Allen B. J., Graham’s Boca Bird third, and Harry Wight’s Canadulzal II fourth—an identical finish to, last week’s race at Casanova.
