Kappanannock Republicans who turned out for last Friday’s mass meeting of the Grand Old Party were in high spirits. They were laughing because over 50 persons showed up at the courthouse for an event that drew only seven just two years ago. Some of the faces belonged to natives, some to newcomers and many to young people but however the participants split, one thing was certain — there were more Republicans in the courthouse on Friday than anyone expected to see gathered under one roof in the county.
Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson was the guest of honor at the meeting called to select county delegates for the upcoming Republican convention. Representatives from three of the candidates seeking the GOP nomination for William Scott’s Senate seat were there looking for support. But George Beard, freshman delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, stole the show, judging from the applause and laughter that greeted his remarks.
“I didn’t think I’d ever see this many Republicans in Rappahannock County in my lifetime,’’ Beard began. “But Chester Gap,” he said, shaking his head over the absence of delegate candidates from that precinct. “We need a name in Chester Gap real bad — I only got nine votes out of there.” After someone in the audience commented that there were enough at-large names in the running to cover Chester
