"1 spend a whole year trying to teach Johnny to read," responded elementary teacher Lynn Baines. When a child can’t learn and no one knows the reason why because there aren’t enough funds in the budget to provide for adequate learning disability testing, this adds to teacher frustration, Mrs. Baines explained.
"We don't get paid health insurance like coal miners,” she continued. Without health insurance, teachers with families to support on a relatively low income often hesitate to take their own children to the doctors, and instead, wait a day to see if the child will get better before spending ten dollars.
"It’s not that we’re not dedicated,” Mrs. Baines continued. "We’re so damn frustrated. And it’s not just the money. Many of our requests (for psychological testing, summer school and additional programs for the learning disabled) are ongoing, everyday, through the administration.”
"We all have to be innovative. It’s part of teaching," Mrs. Massie responded.
Kim Estes, a high school senior and student in the Rappahannock schools for 12 years, said her classmates all "know that the teachers are behind them. We see the dedication," she maintained. Rappahannock teachers “push for you to go ahead and make something of your life,” Kim concluded.
