Stating that he was quite concerned over the growing controversy regarding public education, Eastham said he wasn’t on the side of the teachers, the School Board or the landowners but was only “for the children being educated.”
Adequate Funds For
Teachers?
Noting that there was nothing more important in a school system than good and dedicated teachers, he maintained that the question involved in the budget controversy was whether the school system was providing adequate funds for the county teachers. Many citizens feel the School Board is providing adequately, said Eastham, and reported that county residents were asking the following questions:
1. Is the salary raise awarded the teachers in the proposed budget a cost of living increase or a step increase? Is the problem with the label applied to the raise?
2. Why have teachers sought employment in Rappahannock County when some feel that teachers are underpaid here? (He also added that there were currently more teachers looking for jobs than there were positions available and reminded the audience to keep this law of supply and demand in mind.)
