County, spoke on behalf of candidate Dick Obenshain. Marshall noted that Obenshain had managed the campaigns of all the victorious Republicans in Virginia in the last decade. “I think it’s time to get behind Dick..'.He wrote the book on Republicanism in this state.”
Ken Styles, dairy farmer and member of the Board of Supervisors in Frederick County, represented Senatorial candidate John Warner. “I’m a little cynical when the extremely wealthy run for office," said Styles, adding that the motives the rich have for seeking office usually include "an ego trip.” This is not the case with Warner, Styles maintained. “I sat down and talked with John...The thing that impressed me was that John listens.” Styles added that Warner was also well informed.
"His image is that of a glamour candidate,” Styles continued. ‘‘There’s no question that he’s got''’the gAmour: 1 think tHaffr kn asset." Warner, because of his “’glamour,” will get millions of dollars of free advertizing out of a Senatorial campaign, Styles maintained. Warner has also been active in the Republican party “in a very quiet way” for a number of years, he reported.
“John Warner will be able to raise the most money," Styles said. "We might as well lay it on the line... It’s something that may or may not be fair,” he acknowledged, in emphasizing his candidate’s economic value to the GOP.
Following the presentations by the representatives of the Republican candidates, three delegates and three alternates were chosen to go to the district and state conventions. Delegates are Rappahannock Republican Committee Chairman Frances Carney, George Sharp and Chris Parrish. Before adjourning the meeting, Mrs. Carney noted that, for the first time, Rappahannock would have three delegate votes instead of two at the Republican conventions.
