The Rappahannock School Board members began work on establishing goals and objectives for the coming year at the August Board meeting and improvement in reading performances was high on everyone’s list. Evaluation of teachers also drew attention as did community-school relations.
Board members Alan Stokes, the first to reel off concerns, stated that the superintendent should be ready to upgrade basic skills of high school students by 20 percent and elementary students by 25 percent. He called for an examination on basic competencies to be given to eighth graders under the direction of the central office and proposed that teachers be evaluated monthly with weaknesses noted and dated in writing.
