Park Visits

According the statistics released by Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Robert Jacobsen, Park visits in July 1978 totaled 329,100. This compares to 490,100 visits in July 1977—a decrease of 32.9 per cent. To date, visits in Calendar Year 1978 compared to Calendar Year 1977 have decreased 43.2 per cent.

Part of the reported decrease may be attributed to new procedures for counting travel instituted January 1, 1978. A new multiplier (2.8 rather than 3.5) is being used for converting vehicles to visitors and travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.

Overnight stays in July 1978 totaled 101,082 compared to 110,135 in the same month the previous year. To date, the Park has had 284,782 overnight stays in 1978. Overnight stays for 1977 amounted to 330,570.

Maximum temperature in July as measured at Big Meadows Weather Station was 83 degrees. Minimum was 44 degrees and precipitation totaled 6.06 inches.
