Dr. L. Robert McDaniel, assistant superintendent for the Rappahannock school system, came a long way to take his new position in the county in a change that can be measured by more than mites. Dr. McDaniel and his family are formerly from Cook County, Illinois—an area that includes the city of Chicago and seven million people. ‘‘We were five minutes from the largest enclosed shopping mall in the world,” he noted—a far cry from Rappahannock with its population of 5,500 and not even a drug store, not to mention a mall!
A desire for a quiet family life plus the wish to get back into the field of public education influenced Dr. McDaniel to leave the Chicago suburbs and accept the position of assistant superintendent here.
A 1965 graduate of Wake Forest College with a bachelor’s degree in history. Dr. McDaniel earned his masters degree in education administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went on to receive his doctorate in education administration from Duke University. Between Wake Forest and UNC, Dr. McDaniel interrupted his educational career for a two-year tour of duty with the United States Army as a transportation officer.
With the Durham, North Carolina, school system from August 1968 until July 1971, Dr. McDaniel was assistant principal of Rogers-Herr Junior High and principal of North Durham Elementary. He left Durham in 1972 to accept a position as administrative intern for Perrymont Elementary in Lynchburg and was evaluator and director of Title Three programs for the Lynchburg public school system from August 1973 through June 1975. During his stay in Lynchburg, McDaniel also taught “Organization and Administration of Public School” for the Central Virginia Community College.
