Board member Paul Nichols’ list was short and to the point. Nichols said he wanted to see compliance with s t a t e - m a n d a t ed Standards of Quality and progress in moving the school bus garage back off Route 211.
Mrs. Massie read the list of goals and objectives submitted by Board member Arthlinda Quaintance, absent from the August 8 meeting. Mrs. Quaintance called for more emphasis on reading in grades one through three, help for new and inexperienced teachers, strict promotion policy in primary grades and discussion of teacher salaries earlier in the year.
Mrs. Massie, in reading her own list, joined the other Board members in stressing that more emphasis needs to be placed on the basic skills, particularly on reading in grades one through three. She also propped a better guidance department for the high school, earlier supervision for new teachers, better evealuations for all teachers and improved community-school relations.
Education Association president Don Bomberger asked if improvements and expansion to the school plants could be included in the goals and objectives.
“That wouldn’t be appropriate for this year,” Mrs. Massie replied. She added that the September School Board meeting had been designated for a special discussion on capital outlay projects that will be required in the near future.
