BLACKSBURG —Late summer is the time to seed new lawns and to repair those already established. Normally between Aug. 20 and Sept. 15 is the most desirable seeding season in northern and western Virginia. One to three weeks later is the best time for seeding in Southern Piedmont and eastern Virginia.
"Home owners using Kentucky bluegrass or one of the fescues will find late summer or early fall the preferred time of the year to seed these species," said J. F. Shoulders, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in turf.
"Seedlings establish satisfactorily only when proper conditions exist. Late summer and early fall are the times when temperatures, the length of day, and moisture are more favorable for turfgrasses to establish than they are at any other season, including spring.”
Shoulders said that a number of bluegrass varieties, tall fescue, and fine fescues that have performed well and persisted under Virginia climatic conditions are recommended for use in the state. Many varieties are not recommended because they are inferior or have not been tested long enough to establish their adaptability.
