elementary school on their annual trip through history.
1 willingly—even eagerly—volunteered for the three day adventure. No one coerced me into it, none of the teachers twisted my arm to get a yes. At the same time, however, my eyes were open. I was fully prepared to return home and write “The Journal of a Demented Chaperone,” a story that' would go one step beyond “The Diary of a Mad Housewife.”
But that wasn’t necessary. Assuming that I was sane when I left, I returned in basically the same condition—a little weary, feet aching, full of more than my usual quota of sodas and junk food but also full of a new found appreciation for our American heritage.
As an adult who left U. S. and Virginia history classes behind more years ago than I care to remember, it was a thrill to see the past come alive on the streets of Williamsburg and in the fort at Jamestown. As one of, twelve adults in charge of a horde of teenagers, I won’t soon forget those three days.
