It looked like an ant hill with the top kicked off—delegates and senators stalked purposefully through the halls, pages scurried around trying to look important, news reporters flashed cameras and flourished notepads and, in the middle of it all, genteel southern belles conducted armies of school children on tours.
Visit With Two Georges
We saw the only statue of George Washington carved from life. Done in Italian marble, he stands underneath a dome painted two hundred years ago but the colors in the ceiling glow as if they’d come off the artist’s pallet only yesterday.
While we waited for Delegate George Beard, our guide gave a short history on each of the Virginia sons whose busts line the alcoves in the old assembly room—heros of the Revolution and Civil War, explorers and Presidents of the United States.
Delegate Beard, who’d just seen a bill he’d sponsored safely through the House of Delegates, took time out from a busy schedule to speak briefly with the kids and shake their hands before hurrying back to the session.
We trooped around the Capital, stopping to admire the Governor’s Mansion, and climbed back on the bus. The kids got a brief glimpse of a demonstration—although a quiet and orderly one—from women lined up on the next block carrying placards in support of passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Without tear gas, police and riots. I'm not sure that the kids recognized the ERA ladies were real demonstrators.
From the Capital, it was a cross town jaunt to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for a smidgeon of culture. We had a picnic lunch on the grounds, blessed with unseasonably warm weather. Then, for the first time, we divided into small groups, each chaperone with eight kids, for a race through the halls of the museum.
