We reached Richmond about 9 a.m. with ear drums strained but still functioning. First stop was a tour of the new Phillip Morris plant, employer of 5,600 people—a workforce equal to the entire population of Rappahannock County. The importance of tobacco to Virignia’s economy was highlighted X>~ the $10 million worth of cigarette inventory that clears the plant every three days.
With its employee cafeteria, nurse’s station and courtyard gardens, Phillip Morris’s operation is a long way from the sweatshops of the industrial revolution studied by the seventh graders. Following a promotional film, seventh grade history teacher Susan Henry countered the blatantly pro-smoking propaganda with a little talk of her own on the danger to health that smoking presents.
It must have worked. None of the kids tried to convince the tour guide that they were old enough for a sample pack and several hooted at the adults who took advantage of the freebies. The kids, bless them, seemed much more
