One bill I supported in spite of editorials in a Culpeper and Orange paper was a bill to protect Independent Service Stations from encroachment of cutrate stations, which are run by Oil Companies. The bill is not as bad as the Oil Companies and Richmond papers indicated. All present cut-rate stations can remain, and only if the Oil Companies open new ones, must they be dealer operated.
My argument was that the Independents render so much more service than the cutrates. Besides, who’s going to fix your flat tire if the Independents are driven out of business?
Another interesting bill that was passed exempted church-operated day care centers from being licensed by the Department of Public Welfare.
