Rescue Squads from Sperryville, Amissville, Washington, Castleton and Flint Hill will receive communications and emergency equipment as part of a $164,301 grant awarded to the RappahannockRapidan Emergency Medical Services Council. Approximately $110,000 of the grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) wUl be used to establish a special emergency medical services communication system.
As part of this system, Sperryville, Amissville and Washington squads will receive ten-channel, ultrahigh frequency radios. The radios will provide a clear line to Fauquier and Culpeper hospitals so that squadsmen will be able to contact a doctor if a severe life threatening problem arises.
According to Gary Rosson, Field Coordinator for the R appahannock-Rapidan EMS Council, the system will be expanded next year to include communications with Warren County and other Shenandoah Valley hospitals.
Rosson noted that the communications system will also open new avenues of advanced training for rescue personnel who could, for example, learn to administer, intravenous (IV’s) solutions.

Investigated
The Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department and the Virginia State Police are investigating the death of Virginia Frances Jenkins of Sperryville.
Mrs. Jenkins died at her home located on a hill behind the barbershop in Sperryville at approximately 8 p.m., Sunday, July 22.
She was found by her husband, James, who called the local rescue squad. She died shortly after squadsmen arrived on the scene.
According to Sheriff W. A. Buntin, death was caused by a bullet wound in the temple, probably fired by some type of revolver. “At this time, it’s hard to say for sure what happened,” Buntin reported.
