Jones unscrewed the bolts fastening the top half of the pole and lowered the house , carefully to the ground. As if explaining away the foibles of a dear friend, he apologized for the kestrel’s sloppy housekeeping, adding that the parents kept the “nursery” a lot cleaner when the baby birds were younger.
He opened the top to find four fledglings still with traces of down left on their heads, all huddled in a pile in the corner. “People think they’ll get pecked by the beak but that’s not true,” said Jones as he slipped on a glove before reaching for the first kestrel. “Talons are their means of defense.”
