the Vero Beach flight school, iPat was the only wheel chair student but he noted that many paraplegics fly, particularly on the West Coast.
Although he gets around well in a wheel chair, Pat has long range plans to furtheiincrease his mobility. He tried ordering a specially designed brace that would enable him to walk but found after spending several hundred dollars that the contraption didn’t work. “I’m going to build long leg braces when I have the time and the resources—some type of mechanical thing that will allow me freedom and speed,” he explained.
The Millers have one word to describe their house guest. “He’s a super person—just super,” said Carol Miller in speaking for the entire family about their friend.
But Pat Donavan doesn’t see himself as anything special. He doesn’t view his achievements as heroic or an example for other handicapped persons who find themselves slipping into selfpity. His independence, his athletic accomplishments, his continuing education, both in the air and in the classroom—he sees it all as average. His matter of fact explanation for his efforts is “I would have done it all anyway.”
