Through banding, Kestrel “kare taking’’ and other efforts to keep track of the small falcon, bird enthusiasts and naturalists hope to gather data on their immigration patterns and population and determine whether or not kestrels will return to and prefer manmade houses.
On Tuesday, Jones picked up Ted Manwaring, another bird lover, and visited a kestrel family on the Manwarings’ Red Oak Farm. Bouncing across a field in Jones’ jeep, we saw an adult bird d~p lunch off at the kestrel ..ouse and retreat to a roost on a telephone wire.
The parents feed and run, Jones explained, because the young kestrels display more and more aggressiveness as time to leave the nest approaches. “They love wires,” he added, noting the adult bird’s perch on the telephone line. “That’s one reason why I put the houses near wires.”
He warned that the parent birds might become alarmed as the house came down. “They’re very maternal,” he explained. The adult birds, however must have decided their offspring were big enough to fend for themselves since neither mother nor father swooped down on
