Pat - Donavan is a paraplegic, confined to a wheel chair as the result of an automibile accident that left him paralyzed from just above the waist. But Pat’s handicap has- not made success impossible—only a littfe more difficult to achieve.
A houseguest of the Newbill Miller family of Washington, Pat arrived, several weeks ago from Florida. Like thousands of other kids with limited financial resources, he used his thumb instead of an airplane or train ticket for the trip. Hitchhiking in his wheel chair took six days. “From north of Harrisonburg on, it was easy to catch a ride but Florida was hard to get out of and Tennessee and Kentucky were a drag,” said Pat. Motorists thought the wheel chair was a prop, part of some elaborate con game. “They didn’t believe I was paralyzed,” he added.
Pat doesn’t need much help getting in and out of cars, just a little bit of assistance in collapsing his wheel chair. The chair has seen a lot of hard service. It’s battered and bent in places and requires a swift kick before it will cooperate and fold together.

(Continued from Page 1) Davis is interested in social work and has thought about entering this field but it would take additional schooling. However, this has been impossible with a family for which to care. She is the daughter of Edward and Ethel Bailey of Washington and is married to David Davis who is a warehouse foreman at Crowder’s Transfer and Storage in Alexandria. She has three children and two step-children and they also live in Washington where Marie has spent most of her life. Prior to her employment with the Welfare Department, Davis was study hall monitor at Rappahannock County High School. Social Services director Elizabeth Buntin told the Welfare Board at last week’s meeting that “Marie is working out very well. I’m very pleased.”
